Located off Geraldton, the Abrolhos Islands are fishing heaven, offering a stellar mix of northern and southern species. Aside from the huge numbers of rock lobster for which the Abrolhos is famous, there is great fishing for dhufish, coral trout, pink snapper, spangled emperor and very big samson fish, to name but a few species.
Fishing closer to the surface can produce big yellowfin tuna, shark and spanish mackerel, and yellowtail kingfish. Casting lures around shallow reef is a sure way to uncover some coral trout. There are also billfish west of the Abrolhos.
Closer to town, the beaches and rockwalls around Geraldton offer tailor and herring, plus a few big mulloway. Drummond Cove is noted for tailor and occasional mulloway. African Reef and Pensioners are two of the spots on offer to small boat anglers that produce similar species to the Abrolhos at times.
